A playful New Year experiment that helps kids name their style and trust their instincts
Welcome, Prelove Scientists!
January is full of “new year, new you” energy—but kids don’t need reinvention. They need self-trust. This month’s Lab turns style into a creative experiment: naming what they like, making choices, and seeing how clothes can support how they want to feel (no shopping required). Just imagination, reflection, and a little runway confidence.
Spoiler alert:
Seeing is believing.
The Style Word Lab
Because confidence starts with language.
Ingredients:
Paper or index cards
Markers or crayons
A closet full of clothes they already own
Method:
1. Ask your child to choose one word they want their clothes to feel like this month (Cozy, Bold, Fast, Calm, Sporty, Curious).
2. Write the word on a card.
3. Build an outfit that matches that feeling.
Parent Lab Report:
“My kid picked ‘Bold’ and paired stripes with neon. Zero hesitation. Maximum confidence.”
— Jamie, Parent Scientist
The No-Second-Guess Outfit Challenge
Because trusting your first instinct is a skill.
Ingredients:
A full outfit selection
A timer
Method:
Set a 60-second timer.
Your child chooses one full outfit—no swaps, no edits.
When time’s up, that’s the outfit.
Ask: “What do you like about it?”
Parent Lab Report:
“She said, ‘It just feels right,’ and honestly? That’s the goal.”
— Emily, Parent Scientist
The Confidence Mirror Moment
Learning to talk kindly to yourself (out loud).
Ingredients:
A mirror
One brave kid
Method:
After getting dressed, have your child finish one sentence:
“I feel confident because…”
“My favorite part of this outfit is…”
“This outfit makes me feel ready for…”
Write it down or snap a photo to remember it.
Parent Lab Report:
“He said, ‘I look like myself.’ That was it. Lab complete.”
— Mark, Parent Scientist
