The Winter style studio
Three simple projects that turn cold-weather dressing into a confidence-boosting adventure
Welcome, Prelove Scientists!
Winter is here, which means layers, textures, and cozy favorites are taking over the closet. Instead of just bundling up, we’re turning getting dressed into a creative experiment. These playful style labs will help discover winter look—while making the most of the preloved pieces already in rotation.

Spoiler alert:
Confidence is the warmest layer of all.
The layering lab
Because winter is basically a puzzle, and you are the designer.
Ingredients:
- Puffer coat
- Sweater
- Hoodie
- Long-sleeve tee
- Pants
- A handful of “Layering Formula” cards: Warmest, Coolest, Sportiest, Silliest

Method:
Have your child draw a Formula Card (example: “Warmest Look”).
Then build an outfit using only preloved pieces.
Snap a photo of their creation (they LOVE this part).
Repeat with a new card.
Parent Lab Report:
“My son pulled the ‘Silliest Look’ card and layered every stripe he owns. He declared it his ‘super-scientist uniform.”
— Dana, Parent Scientist
The one-choice outfit challenge
Because confidence grows when kids trust their first instinct.
Ingredients:
- A full winter outfit selection (tops, bottoms, layers, accessories)
- A timer (or a phone)
- A full winter outfit selection (tops, bottoms, layers, accessories)

Method:
Set the timer for 60 seconds.
Ask your child to choose one complete outfit (no switching, no overthinking.)
When time is up, ask one simple question: “What do you like about it?”
Parent Lab Report:
“My daughter picked an outfit in under a minute and wore it all day. She said, ‘I just knew.’ Honestly? Goals.”
— Aisha, Parent Scientist

The mini winter capsule challenge
A tiny wardrobe with huge creativity.
Ingredients:
- Any 6 winter items (coat, sweater, tee, pants, hat, scarf, etc.)
- “My Winter Capsule” worksheet
- Any 6 winter items (coat, sweater, tee, pants, hat, scarf, etc.)

Method:
- Let your child choose their six hero pieces.
- They create three outfits using only those items.
- Have them name each outfit—kids love a theme. Celebrate their capsule with a mini runway sweep through the hallway.
Parent Lab Report:
“He picked six items and built a whole ‘Explorer Collection.’ Apparently corduroys are essential for discovery.”
— Leo, Parent Scientist
